 | XCom Press Release |
|
| |
For some reason, this thing got sent to Gasman. That's why it's a little delayed.
It's a press release for the upcoming Extreme Computing event being held in London, uhm, this weekend. Highlight as far as I can see is the "Salute to 20 Years Of The ZX Spectrum", a talk featuring a host of authors of some classic ZX games. More details can be seen on the site.
The full press release can be found here.
Can you believe this is the 1000th post?

 | More bits from the web |
|
| |
Well, I told you I'd be away for a few days. Back now, so time for some clean-up.
I do apologise for the crappy-ness of the news recently. There's been "other forces" at work keeping me from spending very long in front of the PC. This has also meant that the (often mentioned) changes to the site haven't got very far. I really am a slack-arse, eh? Oh well.
- SimCoupe : Not really a ZX thing, but I noticed that this emulator should soon be in for an update. Emulates the Sam Coupe, in case you really missed the hint.
- UnrealSpeccy : Yet another update for this emulator. No idea of the changes but sources are included for 0.21b2.
- RetroMart : Head over to MicroMart to check out the latest articles from the pen of Shaun Bebbington (of the now abandoned RCT). Latest stuff includes a FAQ, info on the ZX'96, and it looks like there's a new Amiga-column too (by a different author).
- Sprinter : A couple things were added to the Peters page. There's a Tetris variant for the machine, but more notably there's now a knowledge base for all your techy queries.
- Demotopia : Check out Gasman's site for a bit of news on Symphony 2002, and another update with the last of the V-TRD demos ... I can't be bothered to count the new downloads, but there's stupid amounts. 1457 unique demos online.
- ZX DJ? : Eheh, this note from X-Agon mentions a DJ calling himself "ZX Spectrum". You can check his (non-ZX) site here.
- Bacteria : An email from Ivan of speccy.org mentions that this emulator still exists, but the author's busy (aren't we all), so development has slowed down. The site will prolly be hosted on speccy.org soon.
- RuskiMatic : Partially in response to my note about Russian emails, Gasman has created this neat tool which takes your text and passes it through translate.ru. Very handy, eh? Thanks sir!

 | Assorted News Stuff |
|
| |
Yet again, you catch me feeling tired. It's been a long day for me. Hmph. But it's not all bad, as I have a 4-day weekend coming up, during which time I'll be mainly away from the PC. So raww.org won't get updated in that time, but I'll be able to catch up on sleep and drinking. Hoorah!
- Bacteria? : Just checked out the homepage of tiny emulator Bacteria and... it's no longer there. Oh well. Another one gone.
- ProTracker : For the musically-minded, I see that Optical Brothers have posted v3.54 of ProTracker on their site for download. Handy.
Oh, not so much news today.
Before I go just a note to people... if you email me, please can you do so in English -- I'm a bit stupid, and being stubborn I don't understand Russian/Czech/Polish/etc. I've had a couple emails recently which frankly mean nothing to me (and cutting-and-pasting into translators doesn't help as the txt is screwed up). If you don't know English, then please pass the mail through someone who does first. And don't worry if your English is bad... so's mine <g>.

 | Retro Computing Today gone? |
|
| |
Received a mail from Shaun of Retro Computing Today, talking about the status of the magazine. Seems that it may never appear, although the webpage will still exist, as will his regular columns in MicroMart. The reason? Well partly due to a lack of interest:
"
It looks like Retro Review have the backing by enthusiasts. The good thing is that I can concentrate on developing the Retro Computer Mart column for Micro Mart. This has two advantages over R.C.T -
1) It is a weekly column, so I can spread the word of any news pretty quickly and
2) The reader base for Micro Mart is approximately 24,000 - which no Retro mag will ever achieve.
"
This is a good point. 24,000 potential readers each week is a good figure by anyone's standards. And if it encourages people to reach into the cupboard and pull out the dusty old ZX, then the world will be a better place for it.

 | More Notes... |
|
| |
As seems to be the trend with raww.org at the moment, I'm just gonna put up a few notes for now. It's a late-night update again, and I have a long day tomorrow. Again.
- AY Toons : Fancy grabbing some music? A (rare?) update to Baze's 3SC homepage shows a new/updated archive of his music. Just head for the bottom of the page.
- Learn English : Noticed that Peters have added a bit of English Dictionary software to their page. It's for the Sprinter 'puter. I should grab it and give it a go in the emulator -- see how good it is <g>.
- Genius : No, not news about me (eheh), but instead someone has provided the full manual to Laser Genius, a rather nifty assembler/dev-kit. Most sceners will be using Tornado or a cross-asm or something, but it could be a useful reference. Available on WOS.
- SE4 VoteSheets : I confess. I'm one of the ones that Raver was talking about when he sent an email around mentioning that some people haven't returned their votesheets for Sub-XTC. If you're like me then grab it, fill it in, and return it. Go on.

 | Paradigmus ZX voting |
|
| |
Just time before I go to bed to mention that there's some ZX Graphics posted over on the Paradigmus 2002 party-page. Just four images for now, but I think the idea is that you email the team to vote on which you think is best. Give them all marks out of 10. They're all quite good, but my money's on Earthworm Jim, both coz it's a good image, and a fantastic cartoon. But don't let me sway your vote!

 | Notes |
|
| |
Here's a few notes before the "larger" news of the last few days. And yes, yet again I've been absent for the weekend, but you'll get no details of what I was doing. Frankly, it wouldn't excite you.
Scenet/Scenia : A little note on the Scenet news page indicates that it could very well be going through a redesign. And name-change. You can access it now at scenia.net, too.
- RetroComp : Looks like the down-ness of Retro Computing Today was just a temporary glitch. It's now back up.
- RetroMart : From the author of RCT comes the next article from MicroMart. It's a justification of owning a C64. Well, should make an amusing read <g>.
- Ramsoft : Interesting... update? over on the Ramsoft homepage. Just something about TetriNet. Hmm, think something has gone wrong.
- Factor6 : Spotted on c64.sk that ZX-scene icon Factor6 has joined Role, a C64 group. Lovely.
- Symphony : A little note to mention that Symphony][ is being held on 17th to 21st July. Forgot that before.
- Millennium : If you get yourself over to Scenosaurus quickly you may be in time to grab some work from the Millennium demoparty. But the links are temporary, so hurry!
- Quick Commander : As well as RC2.3 being released a few days ago, I noticed that you can grab the latest version of Quick Commander over on DJH Downloads, if you so desire.
- Museum's : Noticed when this link got submitted that I'd not included it before. Well, it's fixed now. It's the ZX Software Museum.
- Phat : More hints of a party, this time news from Raver that Phat demoparty will be going ahead this year, despite some rumours. The month is September, the place is Riga. Details will be released soon.
- CD-ZX : Mentioned about a week ago a project on accessing CD-ROM drives through a ZX. Well I've heard from the author of the article, and he's soon going to be translating it into English (with a little guidance). Some deep techie words to look forward too, yes!
- Es.pectrum : After realising that I was checking the wrong webpage (grr, sites continually move), it's nice to see a new version of this emulator released. Some nifty features include lightgun support, Debugger, and... oh, go download and play with yourself. I mean, play with it yourself!
Phew. Another long post, and just when I'm feeling really tired, too.

 | Blah! |
|
| |
I'm going to have to be quite quick, coz for the last couple days my 'net connection has been shit. Not sure what's actually wrong, but it's pissing me off a little as you can imagine.
Here's a few bits-n-pieces from around the world:
- Forever Photos : If you're on the lookout for some photos from the fairly recent Forever3 party, then check out these two links: one, two. Links were ripped from the party homepage.
- UnrealSpeccy : Looks like this emulator that's no longer in development has gone up a version again. I can't actually get to the official homepage, but you can grab the latest version (0.21) on DJH Downloads.
- Txt-Edit source : If you're looking at coding on the Sprinter, Peters have posted the source for their text editor, working on 640x256 mode. A handy learning aid.
- ASCii photos : If you're yearning for even more party photos, then check out the ASCii2 section over on POS for some.
- Twilight : Another party is planned for later in the year. I'll grab the details over the weekend, but for now check out the homepage of Twilight.
- Crazy Syberians : If that wasn't enough, then POS have mentioned CSP 2002. I don't have any details right now, but I'll hopefully keep you posted.
- Retro : Looks like Retro Computing Today has disappeared from the web. Either that or AOL have kindly deleted it by accident. Any news of a return?
- Real Commander : Can it be that a new version of Real Commander has been released? Actually, I'm not certain what the last version was, but it's at 2.3 now. Sound new to you? I dunno.
- SDP : Kinda a follow-on from the Spectrum Tape Preservation project comes SDP (for disks, no less). Being run by Andy Barker, it was "announced" on the WOS forums, in the Emulators thread: "+3 disks and pc's".
- ZX-Party : Not to feel left-out, Will, the organiser of ZX-Party, announced another party with a ZX section. The homepage of Symphony][ will have some details in English soon. I hope. There's a little info posted on Scenet.
- Paradigmus : The first results from this party have been released, but... no ZX results yet. I've been told that they should be coming soon.
I'll try to get a little more information together about these newly-announced parties in the next couple days, when my connection will hopefully be fully restored. I'll also add the parties to the calendar later.
And don't worry if you've emailed me but haven't seen anything posted here yet. I'll hopefully get around to it soon. If all else fails, re-send.

 | Sprinter downloads updated |
|
| |
Peters Plus have posted some new downloads onto their page. Looking at the file dates, it's all documentation (tho' the frontpage would indicate otherwise). The new stuff covers Z84C15 CPU and W24512A information, as well as wiring information of the video cables.

 | CD-ROM ZX |
|
| |
An interesting looking article has appeared on ZX-News, looking to be about programming a ZX to access CD-ROM drives. The article is written by sotnikov/Vega I think, and covers different CDROM standards, reading data, and even controlling audio.
Unfortunately partway through the translation Babelfish got bored and the text reverted to Russian. So if anyone feels like translating the article...

 | Retro Exchange |
|
| |
I've just come back from a short weekend in London, having a few "sociable beers". While I was up there I took a little time out to do a spot of shopping (well, the selection is much better in the city than it is in the middle of the countryside where I live).
I took a few minutes to visit CEX (the Computer EXchange). The shop in the centre of London, in Rathbone Place, has a neat Retro exchange, but I was a little saddened to see a distinct lack of ZX Spectrum wares. Perhaps I was looking in the wrong place in the shop, but where they did have loads of ZX stuff, there now was none. A shame.
I almost bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color, tho'. A snip at <30 quid. Pity the games were the same price.
Anyway, regardless of where the ZX stuff was, this shop's a good place to look if you want Retro gear. And you happen to be in London.

 | +3e ROM updates |
|
| |
If you're one of the people who uses the neat Spectrum +3e system, then you could do with grabbing the latest release of the ROMs. Version 1.11 doesn't fix much more than a "Please put disk for ? in drive" bug, and some translational errors in the Spanish version. But if you're like me, you won't be happy without the latest version of everything you use.

 | Extreme Computing ZX |
|
| |
Mentioned a couple days ago about the Extreme Computing event being held in London in early June. Well a quick look at NTK gives information about "Rupert Goodwins, who'll be hosting a salute to 20 Years Of The ZX Spectrum". In case you wondered, Rupert is a coder from the 128 ROM days. There's a couple other ZX-related thingies, including information on Clones and a talk by the author of the book "Spectrum Machine Code Made Easy". Looks like it could be a good event. Wonder what I'm doing on June 9th??

 | CAFe Party and Paradox |
|
| |
I'm just piping the official CAFe Party website through a translator at the moment. The site came online a few days ago, and they've just posted a set of rules.
The party is for Amiga, PC, and of coz ZX. The standard set of competitions will be running (Demo, Intro, GFX, Music) and it's taking place on August 24th and 25th in Kazan, Russia.
Also, while I'm here, I'm adding Paradox 2002 to the party-calendar too, taking place in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia, on the 7th and 8th of September.
This set of news was influenced by Scenosaurus.

POS have posted a couple warez packs from the recent ASCii'02 party. If you skip over the their site you can grab the (almost full) party-pack, missing just a couple of tunes. You can also get a pack of un-shown productions from the party. Not checked them yet. It's queued-up.

 | Shopping for Sprinters |
|
| |
Peters Plus have announced that they now provide online purchasing of the Sprinter kit. Nice, makes it a little easier to get one of these things. Perhaps when my next paycheck has gone through, I'll actually get one. Rip out the innards of my old 486 so I can use the case. Yes.
Incidentally, they're also looking for distributors/re-sellers. If you're interested, or know of a company that may be, check the site.

 | What's in a name? |
|
| |
I've just had an email from Stanly Stall, asking for information about sceners' nicknames. He specifically asks for non-Russian scener information, so that it can be published for the Russian sceners. In return, we should get the same kind of information back.
It's a nice idea I think. There's a lot of people out there who I don't know, so a definitive list of sceners would be handy anyway. Stanly is interested specifically in nicknames, including variations and origins. So, grab yourself this form, and send it on. Be a part of the scene.
Incidentally, here's my information:
Nickname: icabod (note: the small 'i')
Variants of nick: ica, 'bod, Icabod
"making of": saw the name on TV... stole it
The best nick: Mez (Thomas Mezoesi, from DD)
Simply coz it sounds cool
And no, I'm not too bothered if people use icabod with a capital 'I'. That's life, I guess.

Thanks to Gasman for sending me the Buzz'20 votesheet, sent out by Placebo. Buzz ('zine) issue 20 has been awaited for quite a while, so the votesheets are being distributed again, to ensure up-to-date results I guess. So grab 'em up, fill 'em in, and send 'em on. Have to do it quite soon for your votes to count.

 | ParaDiGMus date correction |
|
| |
Quick note to thank Dimedroll for correcting me on the start-date of Paradigmus 2002 - it's May 19th. The calendar on the left has been changed.
Dimedroll also apologised for the crapness of automatic translation engines... hey, it's no-one's fault but Altavista's <g>.
We can hopefully expect an English translation of the homepage soon.

 | Extreme Computing 2002 |
|
| |
Mad props to young Mr. Gasman for sending information on the upcoming Extreme Computing event, being held in London on Sunday 9th June.
It looks quite interesting, featuring a whole heap o' stuff, such as robots, and retro-games, and... well as the site puts it anything "outside the mainstream". There's even the opportunity to buy things.
For a little more information on what will actually be there, you could check out NTK, where they mention a video detailing the C64 Demo-scene. They also point out that they still need "someone to talk about the Russian ZX cloning scene", amongst other things. I can't think of anyone easily available with the knowledge they'd want. Wonder if they'd pay up for MacBuster to come to England?

 | Download some Hardcore (music) |
|
| |
It's a lovely day outside, so happily there's very little news flying around at this moment in time.
Something which I did spot lingering in my email was a note from Yerzmyey, regarding his recent request for ZX-techno-tunes. He mentions that there's no problem with using previously-used tunes (I mean, tracks you've put into demos, etc). For an example of the thing he's looking for, check out this. And to listen to a ZX-tune that's already been remixed, follow this link.

 | Millennium Results |
|
| |
Yes, the results did exist on the 'net all the time. You can see them on the official Millennium'1902 site, and they look a little more complete than the previous listings I've seen. But for once I'm not going to print a few of them here, simply due to time contraints. Check them for yourself here.
There's also a write-up of the party available, in Russian, here. Pass it through a translator if need be.

Okay, there was some news a couple days ago that I wanted to share with you, but frankly I was away. Again. I went up to London to watch Tanya Donelly live. And it was oh so worth the trip. The best song ever (swoon), played live. Just my opinion of coz, but I think it counts.
Hmm, back to the news.

|
| |
Another post about the Millennium'1902 compo? Yes, indeed it is. If you check out Virtual TRD you can find a set of releases from the competition, and what looks like some results, tho' the intro results look a little... garbled.
I'll wait until the official results are out, but until then you can go grab the releases, can't you!?

 | First Millennium Releases |
|
| |
Big thanks go to Sergei Dubarev for sending me the first set of releases from the Millennium demoparty. It's the images from the GFX competition, sent to me just a few hours after the compo took place. No news at the moment on which was the winner, but there are some really nice screen$ in the package. It's all .TRD'd up, so you may need an emulator.

| |
A little note to mention that Sergey Bulba's archive of tracker music has been updated. It now contains an extra 600-or-so files, bringing the total to nearer 8000 tracks. That's, uhm... a fair few.
You should note that the archive is now packed using 7-Zip, a neat program that squashes the archive into around 5.6Mb. And hey, it's free software! Nice.
You can grab the archive on the AY-Emulator page.

Another 30 demos have been posted to Demotopia. You can find out exactly which ones here. There's a combination of new and old work there, but the highlight for me is "Branch Of Mind", a top demo by Axco. Okay, it's been available for ages, but now you can grab it for TRDOS, if that's what floats your boat.

 | WSpecEm is dead, Long live WSpecEm |
|
| |
An post to comp.sys.sinclair from Rui Ribeiro announced that he's no longer developing WSpecEm, his nifty little emulator. But fear not, he's released the source code under the GNU license, so it's all there for the taking. Could be handy if you're planning to write an emulator but aren't quite sure where to start.
Also available on the homepage of the emulator are a couple .PDF files containing Rui's WSpecEm dissertation, and a presentation on emulation. I've queued them up, as I think they could make an interesting read.

 | In A Spin |
|
| |
There was a post a few days ago on comp.sys.sinclair about the release of the beta/alpha (you decide) version of SPIN. It's an emulator, it seems. Ooh, another one.
I've not tried this yet, but it seems that you need Windows and an MMX PC to run it. And a decent processor, too. So grab it and find out if your machine cuts it. And remember, it's not a stable release, so any damage caused is your own fault for being so trusting.

 | Millennium Update |
|
| |
A little note to mention that if you haven't got your entries for the Millennium demoparty in yet, then you're too late. Much too late as the party is about to finish, in fact!
On the official site there's a report from the first day of the party, which you can easily run through Babelfish should you need to. Now we just await the results.

Got a fat pipe? Yes, I know it's a personal question, but you'll really need one if you're planning on downloading the 4 videos taken at the Forever3 party. They were mentioned over on the message-board by Martin Jancovic, who I guess produced them.
To be perfectly honest, I'm not gonna grab them, as they come to a total of around 580Mb. My little 56k modem will break under the strain. If anyone wants to send me a CD with them on, I'll be happy to accept it, of coz <g>.
You can grab them here.

 | Techno Yerzmyey |
|
| |
For those who haven't been mailed with the information, Yerzmyey is starting a new project, creating "Gabber". That's techno-hardcore to you-and-me (no, not that sort of hardcore). But making this project different, and relevant to the ZX, is that the music produced must be based on the ZX. The basis of each track is produced on a Spectrum (or clone -- guessing any AY-based system will do), and is remixed on the PC.
For the full details, check out this post on the X-board. Also provided is a link to information on Gabber. Just in case you're as in-the-dark as I am.

 | ZX-Bot |
|
| |
There was a post a couple days ago over on the Miscellaneous WOS/Forum about LEGO robots. But the interesting thing is that they're controlled with a ZX Spectrum.
Okay, so rather than the linked image (> 400k) being a tutorial, it's simply showing a robot linked to an old 48k machine. But it's a start. Just have to keep an eye out for the old "RoboTEK" interface they have pictured.

 | ASCii 02 results |
|
| |
Odd that I didn't spot this over on POS (but I may have just missed it). DJ Hooligan has posted the results to last weekend's ASCII'02 party. Guessing these aren't official (there's no real production names), but here's the top-3 from each category:
Original AY Music
1 - ??? - Key Jee
2 - ??? - Risk / O
3 - ??? - CJ Echo / Triumph
Copy AY Music
1 - ??? - VAD / ULG
2 - ??? - Monohrom
3 - ??? - Nik-o / Technolab
Pixel Graphics

No doubt I managed to mistype something there, or put a production name down as the author. But I'm tired (again). Besides, I should probably wait until I find the official results, with all the information and downloads.
I have other news, but it can wait until tomorrow I think.

 | Oops! ParaDiGMus! |
|
| |
Only the one bit of news tonight, and it's courtesy of Dimedroll.
Seems that, unknown to me, the Hardwave 2002 party is no longer the Hardwave 2002 party. It's true, the link seems kinda dead.
The party has been renamed to Paradigmus 2002, and will still consist of PC and ZX competitions. If you wanna read the rules, pipe the site through your favourite translator.
Oh, and it looks like it's a week later than I thought, too.

 | ASCii 03 - Planning Ahead |
|
| |
There's a little mention on POS about... ASCii'03. And they've only just finished ASCii'02! There's nothing like planning ahead. October is mentioned, but that may just be the time people are expected to recover from the last party <g>.

 | Stats and Additions |
|
| |
Another update over on Demotopia, featuring a hefty upload of 22 new demos. Okay, so hefty is perhaps the wrong word for a collection of demos that runs on a ZX. But hey, that's life.
Also, for the statisticians among you, the top of the page features some info on what's in the collection... 1419 unique demos available for download. Very nice. Must cross-reference and work out what I'm missing, and go download them. Or ask Gasman nicely to burn a CD for me <g>.

 | Millennium Warning |
|
| |
It is indeed but a few days until the Millennium demoparty. I'm sure I've already mentioned that the standard compo-set are there (512b, 4k, 16k, 640k, gfx, ay).
A few notes have appeared recently on Scenosaurus about the party, stating that you have until May 2nd to get any work in. Oh, and you can find the rules in English if you need them (tho' if you do, you're running a little short on time) here. Also if you have something that'll play .XM files (and no, I don't think a Spectrum will cope with those yet) you can go there and grab an invitation tune.

 | RealSpec beta12 |
|
| |
See. I told you it would happen. I go away for a couple days, and RealSpectrum goes up to beta 12. Yes, the latest build (v0.94.22 to give it's full version number) came out a couple days ago, and has already been mentioned on a couple other ZX-sites. There's not much changed for the "6-months gestation", as Ramsoft themselves admit, but there's a couple handy fixes:
- Joystick emulation is now user-definable.
- Support added for .SLT (read-only) and .SP files.
- New disk formats for D80.
- Mo' speed. about 8% faster, apparently.
- Bugfixes to: Z80 core, AY/YM, multicolour, drive B:, and some debugger things.
- Snow.
Yes, this last item is to do with that funky effect you get if you put the I-register into contended RAM. It's all to do with the floating bus. A full technical description can be found in this article. Seems that the guys have been delving into the really techie stuff, and this (along with their other articles) could be of use to other emulator developers.
A Win32 build of RealSpec should be out in a couple days. As I've mentioned before, this isn't the upcoming Win-RS... it's simply a build that'll work better under Windows. Now, when's that Linux version coming?

 | ASCii2 Over |
|
| |
As you'll know, ASCii'02 happened this weekend. I've not seen much about the party yet, apart from a few things over on POS, including a few photos. Himik has written a bit about the party, but I think we can prolly expect a full report soon.

 | Lull |
|
| |
It's Friday morning (just... has been for about 29 minutes), and there's been very little in the way of interesting news in the last couple days. It's a lull. But after a lull there's usually a huge lump of news. Like a blockage in the news pipe suddenly becomes loose. Or something. Typically, I'm away this weekend. I'm going out drinking and things. Well, it has to be done every now-and-then.
So, what can you do in these next couple days? Well there's a few sites you should really be checking always anyway: WOS, POS, and Scenergy. And remember to check for updates at Demotopia.
And don't forget, there's an "event" happening this weekend, too. The ASCII'02 party. So be sure to check there for updates.
Oh, and as was hinted a few days ago, a new release of RealSpectrum is imminent, so it could be this weekend. Perhaps.
Hmm. I think that's it really for now. Not an entirely useful post, this. But at least you know I'm still here <g>.

 | SE3 language article follow-up |
|
| |
Just a quick mention to what looks like a follow-up to an article written in Subliminal Extacy #3. The follow-up is posted over on Scenergy by Faster. I can't really get to grips with it I'm afraid due to translate.ru playing silly-buggers. But if you know Russian or know of a decent translator, it could be worth a read. Could be some controversy in there. Perhaps.

 | BS-DOS source available |
|
| |
Yes, if you have an MB02 and fancy playing about with it (and I mean really playing with it), you could do worse than to grab the source code for BS-DOS 308. It's the basis for the system. And it's just been posted to the MB02 utilities page.
