 | Just a couple things |
|
| |
As the headline says, a couple little things to while away the night:
- Not ZX-related, but an interesting post has appeared on c64.sk about a new-ish project to produce a new OS for the C64, called WiNGS.
- I forgot earlier to add a new button for RealSoft. It's now done. Yes.
G'night.

 | Interface 1 Bis |
|
| |
Just spotted a post on CSS from Don Antohi mentioning a project he's had on the go for "the last four or five years." It's called the "Interface 1 Bis", and... well, here's a chunk of the post:
"
It is, in essence, a 'better Interface 1', featuring: RAM disk, hard disk and parallel printer port, also used to connect to a PC.
The full documentation, including the commented source code, is available at: http://www.icon.co.za/~dantohi/
"
It's a neat looking little bit of kit, and as mentioned the site contains a bunch of schematics and techy docs, as well as source. Noice.

 | What's in a name? |
|
| |
Heehee. I was just skimming through the flamewars over on Scenet. Seems there's some problem with two groups being called Tristar. Okay, it's on the Amoeba platform, but I think it's an interesting read anyway. Rest assured that there'll never be this problem in the ZX scene. All the best, icabod of RA aka POS aka k3l aka ... <g>

 | Real Commander 2.1i |
|
| |
Well you've surely seen Real Commander from RealSoft if you've ever downloaded a .TRD image. It's one of a number of file manager doobries, and now the English language version of v2.1 is released. It's actually commercial software, but hey, what's $2? A pittance, I tell you. It's less than a pint. You can of coz download a demo version too.
There's also a couple other new tools for download over there, including the new versions of Global Tracker, and UnrealSpeccy.

 | More on Amstrad |
|
| |
Mad props to young Mr. Lewis from "where I work". He pointed out to me that, although I'd spotted the advert in MCV from Amstrad, I had completely missed an article about it. Blame it on sunshine. Blame it on moonlight. Blame it on good times. Just don't blame it on wobbly-footed plastic people. Here's a couple snips from the article by Lisa Byron -- the bits that matter:
"
Amstrad is planning the unlikely return of the Spectrum and Sinclair brands to the market next year.
...
Details are scant at present. However, a major move back into the market appears to be on the cards as Amstrad looks to sign up the copyright to classic Sinclair and Spectrum titles. The company has so far refused to comment on its plans, other than to admit it is working on a major project to target the games sector. But, the smart money is on Amstrad launching either a budget range of classic titles to tap into the current wave of nostalgia for early games or - more likely - that it is planning an entertainment product portfolio for wireless and interactive TV formats.
...
Official announcements are expected in the New year.
"
So there you go. A little more light on the subject, eh?
I should point out that my scanner isn't attached to my PC right now, so I've hand-typed the above quotes in. I think we can assume that, if there's any mistakes they were in the original article. As we all know, I hardly ever type words wrnog.

 | Amstrad digging up the past? |
|
| |
Well you've probably seen this news posted around the place, including Scenergy and on CSS. It seems that Amstrad, who of course took over production of the Spectrum way back around the time I had my first machine, have been asking for information on copyright holders of ZX games. I actually spotted this first when I saw the following advert posted in MCV (a trade magazine):
"
Do you own the copyright to any Spectrum games?
Amstrad (the owners of Sinclair and Spectrum IPR) are currently researching an exciting new project due to launch in 2002.
As part of this project, we are looking to identify developers/writers who may own the copyright to any Spectrum games.
"
I think they could save a lot of time by just asking Martijn over at WOS, who's done a great job of contacting copyright owners.
According to an article on the C+VG website, it's due to the new Amstrad phone coming packed with a ZX-emulator. A nice idea, but one which Amstrad themselves are keeping quiet about. An announcment is expected sometime next year. And just as I was considering replacing my mobile. Hmm.

Been away for a couple days, acting as Mr Removal Man. Yep, me lifting, imagine that. Anyway, a few things have been happening in the world of ZX, so here's a quick rundown -- well you didn't expect me to do all the work did you?:
- UnrealSpeccy : Only a few short days after 0.18b was released, the next version is out. Beta-2 features more optimisations, sound stuff, bugfixes -- you know the score.
- AY Stuff : Over at VORC there's a couple bits of news about ZX music. As well as the release of Global Tracker v1.1, there's mention of a music editor for the Covox running under CP/M. Actually, these bits of news are also from POS.
- Micro-ST : A note to say that the latest beta of Sergey's next emulator is out. Give it a go, you may just love it.
- Retro Review : Spotted this site on WOS. It's a newspaper devoted to Retro 'puters. Nice idea, it'll be interesting to see just how popular it'll be. In the first issue there'll be an interview with FBI of Sintech.

 | Happy Birthday WOS |
|
| |
Gawd, look at the time. I think I just missed it by a day. Hmph.
So a belated Happy Birthday to WOS, 6 long and fruitful years serving the Speccy community. As a present to you all, Martijn has put up a new Java-based emulator which does 128k games. Now you can play loads of classics online. I was talking yesterday to someone about Fighter Bomber, and the various games by X-Com creator Julian Gollop. Perhaps I'll go play them online. Or I could just download them.
More news tomorrow as it's getting a little late.

 | UnrealSpeccy v0.18b released |
|

 | The hills are alive... |
|
| |
Aah, Julie Andrews prancing around rolling hills, singing as loud as hey little lungs will allow. There are some movie moments that you just can't forget. Oh you try, but they're embedded in your head and kept in place with a 6-inch nail.
If only Ms. Andrews had had a Spectrum with an AY-chip.
"
The hills [beep beep whitenoise],
I said the hills [beep thud]...
"
So. Ay music. Y'see, there was a point to all this.
Yesterday, VORC announced that "ZX Irony" has been updated with over 50 new or improved tunes. Go and bolster your collection by performing a downloading spree.
I also notice that the AY-Emulator page has been updated with a new project titled "Micro ST". As you can probably guess it's a player for Atari ST "SNDH" files, and it emulates the YM2149F chip in ABC-stereo. Okay so it's not quite ZX-related, but I thought it was worth a mention.

| | [icabod] - 25/11/2001 @814 |
 | Blah! |
|
| |
Here's a few things that I've neglected to mention from the last few days:
- Speccy4Ever : A new ROM has been posted to allow the use of a PC as mass-storage for a Speccy. You can find more info at Alex Volta's homepage.
- Real Commander : RealSoft have posted the latest release of Real Commander, bringing it up to v2.1. The page says that the English version will appear later.
- Phat1 : If you have an Amiga you may be interested in an announcement on Scenet that "Gets Phat", a party slideshow has been released. You can grab the .lha file here.
- MRS2001 : There's some news on "Scene Portal" about a possible upcoming MindResources 2002 party. Not much info there tho'. Thanks to Bla'dskie for the news.
- Bla'dskie? : On the subject of this news site, I've spotted that there's a big change to it. The translation is coming up crazy -- anyone fancy providing a decent translation? All I can make out is stuff about "sucking porridge", and being treated from "the starry disease". Aah isn't Babelfish great.
- AY-Format : Nope, not a new magazine from Future Publishing, but a discussion on the WOS Phorums from a couple weeks ago about a potential new AY file format. I don't know enough about the chip to comment on it, but perhaps some sceners could give useful feedback.
Right, that's a few things outta the way. Now to install some more crap.

 | ZX-Chart issue 3 response |

 | ZX Irony AY archive |
|
| |
Was on my regular jaunt over to chiptune news site VORC and I notice mention of a site titled "ZX Irony". As the headline suggests, it's an AY-music archive, looking to be pretty much of a games-collection rather than demotunes. But it's worth the trip just to feel all retro.

 | Twilight Demoparty |
|
| |
Found this mentioned over on the Demoparty Calendar, and shockingly it actually contains ZX events. I checked.
The rather nicely designed Twilight site currently only has Russian language, with both English and Polish "coming soon". A quick run through Babelfish gives some useful insights tho'. The party is being held on the 16th/17th March in Kupaly (is that a place? bad translation?). A whole bunch of the standard ZX compos will take place on the first day, followed by Miggy and PC work on the second. ZX productions must work on a standard Pentagon 128 with AY-ABC sound. Heh, bang goes any chance of General Sound work, eh?

 | AY Emulator 2.5 goes non-beta |
|
| |
Yep, the latest version of AY-Emulator has been released, bringing v2.5 out of beta. The addition from beta 2 is time positioning for nearly all file-types. A neat addition, I guess.
You can also go and grab some source for this version, too, and play about with it yourself.

 | Things to come |
|
| |
Finally for tonight, a mention of a couple things I have planned. For a start, Andrew Owen has sent me the latest beta version of SE BASIC, the ROMs used for the ZXSE. No, I won't be posting them for download, but when I get a chance I'll have a play and let you know what I think.
Also, I've been spending my spare time at work (lunchtimes, mornings, and all the rest of the day <g>) playing with the news system for raww.org. Again, I hope to have a beta version running soon, firstly internally, and then for the whole world to play with. I'd give myself a deadline for it to "go live", but you know I'd fail to make it.

 | Vintage Magazine Archive |
|
| |
Here's something that may interest you. On CSS, David Tolley mentioned his new website, the eponimously URLed "old-computer-mags.co.uk". I've had a quick look, and it's a rather nice collection, although to be honest I was looking forward to something more akin to YS-RnRY.
The site has scans from David's 'puter mag collection, including a few "specials" such as the Crash's SU pisstake, "Unclear User".

 | Minigame results announced |
|
| |
Well voting has finished, Gasman has been counting on all available digits, and now the results of the Minigame compo have been released. You'll remember that the aim of this compo was to write a game in as few bytes as possible. Here's a quick rundown of the top few from each category:
2k games
1 - Minima (c64) - Macbeth, Wyndex, MagerValp
2 - Magertris (c64) - MagerValp
3 - Nibbles (zx) - Gasman
512b games
1 - Star Wars (zx) - Serzhsoft
2 - Pacman (c64) - Tape
3 - dwCave (c64) - dW
Well, MagerValp helped to wipe the floor with the other entries in the 2k games compo. And is anyone really surprised to see Serzh up there in the No.1 slot for his 512b game? I don't think so.
The turnout for the competition was good, especially from the C64-camp. Here's looking forwards to next years event.

 | Demobit Cancelled? |
|
| |
Well, to be honest the fact that Demobit was on at all slipped by me. But then it hadn't appeared on any of the "major" news sites that I monitor.
Anyway, this post on the X-board from CreamD mentions that it's been cancelled, tho' it was originally scheduled for this coming weekend. You can still get to the party-page, where you can read up on what's caused this to happen. Assuming you can read Slovakian, at least.

 | AY Emulator 2.5 beta 2 released |
|
| |
Yes, a new version of AY-Emulator has been released, this being beta 2 of v2.5. What's new? Well there's some "time positioning" for .VTX and .AY filetypes, and a bug in CPC emulation has been fixed. Apart from that, pretty much the same. A good same.

A couple little notes about site "thingies". Thanks go to z00m for pointing out that the URL I had for 8bit Company had gone outta-date. For some unknown reason they've removed the link to the Sinclair section from their mainpage. Odd. It's been corrected here now.
Also, I've added another button to the sidebar there, this time for Raww Arse Archive aka Papaya Dezign. You've not checked it recently? Then I suggest you do so now.

 | ZXSE:Michaelangelo Updated |
|
| |
Woo, I almost forgot about this update to Andrew Owen's ZX Spectrum SE project.
The change this time has again been rather massive, but the important news is that there's now a release date for this nimble piece o' kit. And it just happens to be April 4th, 2002, the 20th anniversary of the original Spectrum launch. I'm sure it's just coincidence, mind you.
However there is a catch, in that the ZXSE won't be a thing you hold, it'll be a thing you experience... as software. Oh go to the site and you'll see what I mean. There will be a number of options for running the ZXSE kit, from current hardware projects through to one for the x86 written by emu-coders extraordinaire, Ramsoft.

 | Millennium'1902 demoparty |
|
| |
First spotted this over at VORC. Millennium'1902 demoparty has been announced over at BDP.
It's set for the 4th/5th of May 2002, in Minsk, Belarus. You can get over there yourself to read up on the info (it's all in English too <g>), but suffice to say that ZX compos will be the standard set of intros, demos, gfx, and music. Only annoyance is that entries must be in .TRD format, but it's not a big problem, as entries will be run on Pentagon, so .TRD is easiest.

I don't usually cover games new (the Minigame compo is different, as it's a coding-thing). But I think some worthy news is that TZX-Vault has been granted exclusive rights to publish games from Zenobi software. There's a fair few titles there, with a bunch more still to be converted, I think.

 | Betadisk variant ROMs |
|
| |
A couple days ago, Speccy4Ever posted a couple more ROMs to the vast collection. These are variants of the Betadisk ROMs, or something. Go to the site and check them out. For info, here's what WSW thinks has been added:
- TRDOS 5.04F Base version 5.03, High speed, Turbo format. Copyright C.C. 1991
- TRDOS 5.05D Base version 5.04T, Error fixed, Magic modified. Cyrax Inc. 1997
- TRDOS 6.05R PROFI Version TR-DOS specially under ports PROFI. Enables instead of the "D" disk to create RAM-DISC.

 | General Sound player |
|
| |
According to V-TRD, a new player has been released for the General Sound board. Written by Psb\Halloween, the program titled "Realtime Audio Player" allows the playing of .WAV files in realtime. That's a case of loading from disk and playing as it's loading. A nice idea, and surely it'll have some uses for people who have this board -- wonder if it works with emu's?

 | Minigame voting deadline |
|
| |
A quick reminder (from c64.sk) that the dealine is almost up for voting in the Minigame competition. There's only a week left. Oh, and I see it's also been posted about in CSS. I'm gonna be cheeky and cut-n-paste Gasman's info:
"
Just to remind you there's one week left to send in your votes for the Minigame competition (you know, the contest to find the best 8-bit game written in 512 bytes or 2K of code), to decide upon a winner.
Up till now, votes have been a bit slow in coming in. Hopefully this just means that there'll be a last-minute rush of votes, just as there was for the entries themselves - either that or people are afraid of going over to the Dark Side and actually downloading an emulator for that arch-rival computer :-) If it's the latter, please don't be put off... a lot of sterling work has gone into the entries from all sides, so it's well worth checking out - and clear instructions for running the emulators are included, in the download pack and on the website.
The website? Oh yes. http://demo.raww.net/minigame/
The deadline for voting forms is Friday 9th November...go on, take part.
You'll like it, oh yes you will.
"
I'm sure he won't mind, he has such a wonderful way with words <g>

 | ZXMak "discovered" |
|
| |
On the subject of emulators, I've just spotted another one, found while snooping around Scenergy. ZXMAK is the name, and it's a mu' for Win32. At the time of writing I can't confirm how good it is compared to the "big three" (I say three as I don't know what's become of R80), but it has some nice-looking features, and you can never have too many mu's, right?

 | UnrealSpeccy 0.17b released |
|
| |
Well, I was just looking in astonishmet at the fact I can now access chat.ru sites, and I notice that UnrealSpeccy has been upped again. Guess it got caught up in this updating frenzy of the last couple days.
There's a whole bunch of other tools on there, so I suggest you have a good look through while you're waiting for the really-rather-small emulator to download. Okay, so it's no Bacteria, but at only 103Kb (without ROMs), it's quite neatly packed and... concise.

 | Z80Stealth v0.500 released |
|
| |
It's been a long time coming, but a new version of Z80Stealth has been released. I guess the competition from over-updated UnrealSpeccy has prompted this release of v0.500 <g>
So, what's new in this version? Here's a rundown:
- Low-Level General Sound emulation, includes memory options, etc.
- General Sound debugger.
- Config procedures rewritten.
- Digital Sound Buffer for AY-LPT. Apparently can go screwy under Windows.
- New VMode timing schemes.
- Rewritten to be more memory efficient.
- New Debugger features.
- TRDOS "Built-in Boot" feature.
- New tape-functionality, including .WAV/.VOC image, and tape-browse.
- Z80 Core rewrite.
- Various bugfixes.
That's the basics. There's much more techy info at the homepage.
Thanks go also to Mr.Kirill for mailing me with the news (tho' I'd just spotted the page update as the mail downloaded).

 | RealSpectrum v11.C released |
|
| |
Ramsoft have just released a new version of RealSpectrum, coming neatly to build 0.92.21. They call it a "micro-release", with the previously commented-on improved AY-emulation (at least I guess this is the improved tables they've mentioned). There's also a better tape-browser, and some bugfixes. It's also more stable, which could be useful -- a couple times I've had windows bomb-out when I try to use RS. I know, I know. "Boot into DOS". Nah sod that.
Anyway there's also mention of the upcoming WinRS, which uses Direct-X. The z80 core has been re-written in 100% assembler, running at 100% speed on a 486/33. Okay, so add in all the graphics, AY-emulation, etc, and it won't run that fast, but it looks like a nice engine. Techy-info will be released soon.

|
| |
A little note to say that POS have posted the latest version of the rules for the Enforce demoparty. Of coz they're in Russian, but Babelfish seems to be working nicely now, so go get translating.
As an aside, there's also a post there from Gasman, mentioning "Breath of Death". Seems it contains a remix of a track by Orson\United Minds. Wow, imitation, a true mark of fame.

 | AY-News |
|
| |
Okay, I meant to post a heap o'news last night, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I couldn't be arsed to go online.
So here's some music-news that may interest you.
Over on Project-AY I see there's been an update, with .AYs added from the demos "Binary Love" and "Tim Follin Star Tip 2". There's also mention of a new AY-Player for Linux, called "aylet". Could be a useful alternative for the people who were begging for a *nix version of AY-Emulator. On the subject of which, a new beta has been released. It basically adds support for "AMAD" AY-files, and has some z80 core fixes. Brings it up to v2.5b.

 | Bip Bip. |
|

Couple little notes before I switch off for the night:
- UnrealSpeccy : According to DJH Downloads, another release of this emulator has come out. To be honest I think it's too many -- surely it's better to do lots of work and update only when necessary?
- Psycho : Got sent this link to the homepage of Psycho, and of coz I decided to share it with you. It's been around a while, methinks, but I've not had a link to it. Do now.
- ZpiXel : POS are reporting that there's now an "artist-request" area on ZpiXel, in case you need some work done.
Now. I must go look up the word "promulgate". I don't know what it means, but it sure sounds cool.

 | HellShocked |

A rather nice idea is HellShocked, a Flash-based website upon which you can play around 4000 Speccy games, according to this post on the WOS Phorums. It uses a modified version of the Jasper emulator, including emulation of 128K games (which when I last checked, Jasper couldn't do).
I've not checked it out, as it requires Flash5, and to be honest I just can't be arsed to install it right now. Could be useful lunchtime surfing at work, tho'.

 | zPixel goes live |
|
| |
Well eveyone else seems to have done a pretty-much cut-n-paste job. Please people, use some imagination!!!
Here's a cut-n-paste job:
"
Only kidding.
"
Seriously, I think I mentioned this a couple days ago, from something I spotted first on Scenergy, but now it's gone live. ZpiXel describes itself as a kinda ZX Graphics portal, and it does exactly what it says on the tin.
The site, run by Placebo has kicked off with a couple galleries of work from CC01 and the more recent Phat1 parties. You can also grab a huge number of GFX-tools (a couple of them in .TAP format), and look at a couple personal galleries. I have no doubt that this site will grow into something scene-central (does that make sense?). It'll be important.
Only one real bad point, and that can be summed up in one phrase: "Point me to the menu item that says 'English'". But hey, it's early days.
Oh and I've added a button to the list.
Thanks to both DMan\Placebo, and to Sergey Stepanov for the news. And hey, it's posted everywhere else, too <g>

 | Lines and lines and lines and lines |

So no-one will get that quote. It's from "The League Of Gentlemen", where Tubbs is looking at a map.
Anyway. Lines. There's a thread running on the WOS Phorums about line-drawing routines. It could be worth a look from coders new-and-old. You could learn, or you could teach.
Or you could ignore it and go download filth.

 | 'Puter of the day |
|

Not really Spectrum related, but Sinclair at least. Over at old-computers.com, they've announced that the Z88 from Cambridge Research is the computer of the day. I've included a link directly there, as this news will prolly change in a couple hours.

 | mini-Exception movie |
|
| |
Mad props to LaesQ for taking the time to download the "Exception" mpeg I posted a little while ago, and convert it into neat little DivX;-) files.
You can now save your precious bandwidth and download two versions:
- eX.avi - 4,560,896b : Good quality
- eX2.avi - 2,998,272b : Smaller file
Of coz you'll need the latest DivX;-) codec, which is worth the download regardless.
Well done that man.

 | Good Cop, Bad Cop |

Not sure of the relevance of the headline there. speccy.cz has taken a stand against all the naughty, nasty, illegal sites out there and removed all illegal software from it's archives. That means no CodeMasters, no Ulimate, no Audiogenic... oh, so no great loss yet then.
Basically, if you want to grab your Dizzy games, then you'll have to do some really hard searching. About 5 seconds in Google should do the trick.

 | Demiurge Design Poll |
|
| |
A note to say that Demiurge Ash has a poll on his page, asking you to vote on if you like the new design or not. Personally I think it's rather smart, tho' I'm not sure of the purpose of the woman with the phone. Or is that Demiurge???

 | Sprinter and RealSoft |
|
| |
Okay, two news items tonight, before I turn off this machine, switch on the new beast, and play Max Payne 'till my fingers bleed. Okay, I'll play it for half-an-hour anyway.
- Real Software mention on their site Real Commander v2.1. I'm not sure if this is a new release or just mentioning it will be out soon. I really should learn Russian.
- Speccy4Ever has an update in it's "Builtin Speccy" area, containing a pic of an assembled and working Sprinter. At least the example screenshot looks nice.
