 | Get down and party |
|
| |
Just received an e-mail from Yerzmyey confirming the date of the ZX-Party to be held in Wroclaw, Poland. The party will be from 25th to 27th of August this year. Send any party demos to Yerz, and more importantly try to make it to the party! (even I'm gonna try for this one <g>).
Yerz has also addressed one of my concerns that there seem to be lots of parties, maybe even too many. (It's good for the scene to get together, but producing demos for every party isn't easy). So how's this being handled? [edited for family viewing] "If You will not send us Your stuff, we will (forget) compos, but we will have good fun anyway." That's the spirit!

 | Yet more SpeccyAL |
|
| |
Another update regarding the progress of SpeccyAL. Seems that AY emulation is coming along sweetly, with volume and panning controls for individual channels. There are also two Z80 core's - not sure why... just pick the best and stick with it, say I. Seems that a Work-in-Progress release could be out in a few weeks time.

 | SpeccyAL Mamed! |
|
| |
Spotted a post on the SpeccyAL site relating to the release of the emulators source. Seems that it's gonna be delayed until the AY emulation is improved. SpeccyAL is using the MAME AY Emulation, but it needs some tweaking to get it all shiny.
While doing this post, it occurred to me that the Emu-Watchtm is missing a few emulators. I'm gonna have another trawl around the 'net and see what I can find, and make an attempt to add any extras. Currently, I'm not sure whether to just put up PeeCee emu's, or include all platforms. If you have an opinion, let me know.

 | Happy... |
|
| |
Well, happy Easter for a start. And also, happy anniversary to Hooy Program. I noticed this as the subject on #z80 yesterday, but it never really hit me until I saw this post from Habib/HP on X-Agon's Message-Board:
"If you're interested in '10th Anniversary of Hooy Program' CD, just write to me ... ALL Hprg demos, games and other crap products plus something extra. What? Hehe, write and order, then you'll know! :)"
Sounds sweet, especially as we only need to pay postage. Also, the first 4 people to order a CD will get a limited edition CD, completely free. So get in there quick... these fella's are gonna go like hotcakes!
To order, just fire a mail over to Habib/HP asking for the '10th Anniversary of Hooy Program' CD.

 | Black as a ... |
|
| |
Got a mail from Random/CC today pointing out that I'd not mentioned the Black Raven 2 demo, v0.04. Heh, I'd noticed it, but forgot to write anything in the news section. I guess I got confused when I saw all the high-ASCII in another post (well, that's what it looked like to me <g>).
Oh wait... I remember now, BR2 looks too damned game-like to add to a demo-site. But hey, I'm not picky -- so go grab it from Chaosite/speccy.scenews.

 | Ooh, sourcey! |
|
| |
Happened across this little post over at the SpeccyAL site : "I'm cleaning the code in preparation for a source release. It will be released under the GNU license ... It's completely functional but lacks complete support for AY sound ... As soon as I'll have finished integrating MZ80, the source will be available".
So, we'll have some more emulator source to play with. Stephane (the author) seems to be having some problems with the AY-emulation, hence it's gonna be missing in the code. So, if anyone out there feels like helping out, give him a bell. Maybe I'll look into it, too.

|
| |
Noticed a few updates over on speccy.scenews at Chaosite, most notably some new information on the Millenium demoparty. But (ack!!!) it's all in Russian, meaning poor monolingual Brits like myself have no idea what's going on.
Anyway, the best I can make out is that there's been an update to the rules. Or perhaps not. If any kind Russian-speaking person out there feels like filling me in (oo-er), you can mail me here.
There's also been an update to my links section, that I grabbed from Chaosite - Power Of Sound have a new site. Go check it out, but prepare for a... classic soundtrack to your browsing ;]

 | Demotopia additions |
|
| |
Popped over to Demotopia just as Gasman told me about his latest update. He's added a massive 22 demos, among them some old classics, and some newer releases. At the last count, this puts the Demo-total up to a nicely rounded... uhm... hell, I've lost count. So go fill up your collection!

 | Blah! |
|
| |
Couple little news-nuggets for ya here:
Hooy Program and HellBoj have teamed up to create a new demo. Called Chuj, it's an old-school demo, but like Yerzmyey says, "OLD-SCHOOL IS THE BEST!". Check out this local copy, but prepare for neck-ache when reading that scroller.
Seems that Sputnik who I've previously reported on will probably be a one-off group... although I've been told they're looking for a musician ;]
Oddness on the raww.org layout seems to occur in some circumstances. I've worked out it's prolly just happening if your web-browser's default font is larger than "normal". So, I'll look into making a fix. Until then, live with it, eh??? Good lad.
I'm writing this news while listening to Voyage 34 by Porcupine Tree. Okay, it's not speccy-related, but I'm just so chuffed that I've finally got the full version <g>.
icabod out.

 | Indirect Competition? |
|
| |
Well, I was away during the weekend, so I wasn't able to tell you about some news I spotted over in speccy.scenews at Chaosite. Seems that Random is in the process of creating a music archive. I'm guessing that, among the 6mb+ of modules, we'll be seeing some of the more classic demotracks along with newer competition entries. But i am just guessing.
The music will be appearing in both it's original speccy format and .VTX files for use in vbAY. So get your browsers ready for a download-frenzy.
I just wonder if this is in direct retaliation against Project AY, a similar archive of music. Hell, competition is a good thing for the consumer, right?!

 | RealSpectrum... almost |
|
| |
Needless to say I was excited when I saw that the RealSpectrum page had been updated (Hey, I don't get out much, okay <g>). Alas, a new release wasn't there, but instead a status update. To save me some time, here's a quick cut-n-paste:
"The next beta version is being delayed for a couple of weeks due to some major improvements to the emulator that we believe it's worth to wait for. There will be new supported hardware, great speed improvements, new options and tons of bugfixes. More details in the next days!"
So, keep an eye out, this looks like it could be a goody.

 | Another AY? |
|
| |
I was hanging around on #z80 waiting for some exciting news, when S-S mentioned a version 1.5 pre-release of an AY Emulator. There's a few nice features in there, such as playlists and a mixer... seems like Random's vbAY could have some competition <g>.

The Raww Arse Archive has had an update, allowing you to check out the source to Madrielle by Gasman^RA. In case you don't know, Madrielle is the 1k Intro that came second in the Forever 2e3 demoparty. So now you can see how it's been done.
On the subject of webpage updates, I also spotted that X-Agon has redesigned his page. You get a choice of KDE-style and Win95-style. Both look kewl, so I suggest you check out his page.

 | More vbAY |
|
| |
Random has been hard at work. Amongst all his other projects he's had time to update vbAY to versions 2.2 and 1.666+. Both make fixes to the AZX-player, volume adjustments and wotnot. The Windows version (2.2) also has a couple new features, and more excitingly (if that's your kinda thing), sees the return of playlists. So download, queue-up, and play-away.

 | Going Retro |
|
| |
At last we have some more information (and a homepage) regarding ZX-Party, to be held in Poland. In a mail-shot about the party it's stated that it will be held in August in Virtual, a cyber-cafe in Wroclaw, poland. 28" TeeVee's will be provided, along with a bunch of Hi-Spec PeeCee's, in case emulators are needed. Of coz, being in a cyber-cafe means a permanent 'Net connection, so we could be getting on-the-fly updates, and hell, maybe even a real-time party-cam. But I'm speculating now <g>.
If you're interested in visiting the party, check out http://www.virtual.wroc.pl/retro/zx/ and fill in the form. Now.

 | Dead and buried? |
|
| |
Or rather not. Read over on speccy.scenews at Chaosite some news of a new graphics editor, called Burial by Delirium Tremens^Freedom. It's a beta version, but looks to be feature-packed. Alas, it's in nasty TR-DOS format, but I'm hoping a standard version will be released soon.

Just spotted an update to the Windows-based Spectrum emulator ZX32. The main change in this latest beta (version 2.00.04.04 (really)) is some colour-bleed, just like on a telly. Sweet, although possibly somewhat annoying.
I also noticed that this emu wasn't on Emu-Watch, so it is now. So there.

 | You can call me (Speccy)AL |
|
| |
Hmm. Thought this was gonna be an exciting bit of news when I saw the page had changed, but it's just a short update. However, it shows that development continues for SpeccyAL, with some work going into AY Emulation.
So, I'll take this opportunity to show you that we now have a Personnel page here at raww.org. You can go and meet some of Raww Arse. It needs some work, and I'm sure there are mistakes, but hey, it shows I'm working too <g>.
Also, I've added a little thing on the right so you can submit websites for me to add to the page.
What else. Well, I noticed that Random has mentioned a couple new sites over in speccy.scenews on Chaosite. The sites belong to Mayhem and Power Hackerz Alliance. Could be worth a check-through.
...and I have some news on a new demogroup. Sputnik consists of Natrent, doing code, and Habib on graphics. There's no webpage yet, but I'll update you when there is one. In the meantime, you can check out some of Habib's work on the personnel page.
Thassit. Done.

 | Project AY? Wassat? |
|
| |
Noticed this over at WOS on Friday, and like a complete spanner I forgot to do an update. Project AY is a new site whose plan is to "provide those who appreciate computer generated chip music a chance to hear some of the best moments of the yamaha ay sound chip". Of coz, there's gonna be Follin's-a-plenty, but there's also a section for Demo Tunes. Hoorah! So go check it out.

 | Raww Arse Archive |
|
| |
Well, by my calculations (and the fact that I've been online too damn long today), Raww Arse Archive was updated about half an hour ago. It's basically a big design-change (and what a lovely design it is too <g>). RAA is the main archive for Raww Arse and Extacy-3, and contains all group-related downloads. It's even got some (badly-written) code by me in it. Hell, if you can understand it, be sure to explain it to me ;]
So, go check it out. Now.

 | Full-scale War |
|
| |
Spotted over on Demotopia some news of a multi-format demoparty to be held in Heinsberg, Germany. Radwar 2000 is a party with a difference. Rather than being platform-specific, it's theme-specific. So long as your demo follows the theme, you can participate.
The theme is simple - your demo must follow the story of a bloke going to a party. Sounds straightforward. There are certain limitiations, but I'll let you read those on the rules page. The only thing that struck me as being wierd is that it's a "scene-party without computers! There will be no possibility to put your computer anywhere - so don't bring it". But on the plus side, they say there'll be cheap beer!
The party's organised for 27th May, but if you're free, it may be worth checking out. Go to it.

Assembly 2000!! Eh? Aah well.
Just got an e-mail from Random/CC. Seems that he's helping out on the Spectrum front with regards Assembly 2000, and he's given me some news. It seems likely that "this won't be a compo, but just a SHOW of the best demos/introz of all times". Well, it's better than nothing and who knows, if it goes down well, there may be a full Spectrum section next year.
<RANT>Hell, if nothing else, it's a good chance to show the PeeCee community how to code. "Oh look, I can code a 3d scene with some lens-flares on my 500MHz P-III and GeForce card". I'm only impressed if it looks as good with software rendering on my old 486!</RANT>
Ahem. Sorry for that. My only concern with the plans so far is... who gets to choose which demos are shown? Will it be voted for? ...but I'll leave that for the organisers to decide.

Just spotted over at Demotopia some party news. Of coz there's some info about Paradox 2000, which is being held in May, and ZX-Party 2000 in August, details of which are few, but the name indicates it's Speccy-specific. But (but but), there are rumours that Assembly 2000, the 9th "episode" of probably the most famous party, will have a Speccy Section. Damn fine! I'll be keeping tabs on this, and let you know what's the deal as soon as I find out.

 | Another vbAY fix |
|
| |
Heh. I'm hardly back a few hours, and it seems Random/CC has been busy. He's released two new versions of vbAY. Both versions (for DOS and Windows) fix a problem with the AZX player, and improve anti-aliasing and clicking. The Windows version (v2.1) reduces the processor-load to just 5%, and fixes a classic LaesQ-bug. He managed to crash the previous version with stupid amounts of pumelling his mouse (oo-er).

 | vbAY goes GUI |
|
| |
I'm about to disappear for the weekend (celebrating my birthday and getting extremely drunk, since you ask), so it's just as well that I did a quick check over at Chaosite. Random has released version 2.0 of vbAY, his AY emulator. The changelog reports only one alteration to this update... it's a Windows version. Sweet. The DOS version is staying at v1.6, but should be downloaded if you want to output your AY tunes to .WAVs. Yet another app to add to the download queue, but this ones worth a boost to the front <g>.

Just a quick update to point out that we have a new affiliate... Chaosite. | Forever 2e3 results |
|
| |
Well, Gasman is back from his trip to the Forever 2e3 party in Slovakia, and he brought with him some results from the competitions. Here's a rundown of the top 3 in each category:
1k Intro
1 - Artifice - Serzh
2 - Madrielle - Gasman / Raww Arse
3 - Mathricks - Baze / 3SC
Music
1 - Titanas - Darkman + Justinas / Constellation
2 - Dispazio - Baze / 3SC
3 - New Generation - L.A.Esq / Raww Arse
Graphics
1 - Don't Pass - GAS13
2 - Robin - Agyagos
3 - Alone - Diver / 4th Dimension
Well, two shiny medalions to Gasman and L.A.Esq of Raww Arse. Nice to see <g>.
You've probably noticed that there's no demo competition. Alas, it seems there was only one demo released at the party, Bobering 2000 by Syndrome. Still, I hear it's a good demo to see, so mebbe it would have won anyway.
I've not yet checked, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Gasman hasn't already updated Demotopia with the full party details and downloads.

 | vbAY updated |
|
| |
Just noticed over at Chaosite that vbAY, the AY-3-8912 sound emulator has had a version update. 1.6 brings with it a couple bug-fixes and now has some support for the .AZX format. Sweet. Go get it.

Acchkc! How could I miss it. Mebbe I should spend more time surfing <g>. Or of coz, people could mail me about these things. What things?? An update to RealSpectrum of coz. Not much to note in this release, as it's mainly a bug-fix. There's joystick support now, tho', and "Digital Integration FlashLoading". Hmm. Well, I've got the files queued up for download, I suggest you all do the same.

 | Musical Auctions? |
|
| |
Ebay - vbAY. Geddit? Hmm. Well, it was funny for a few seconds at least.
Random of Concern Chaos yesterday released version 1.5 of vbAY, a DOS-based AY sound player. It handles .VTX and .PSG files, and also has support for playlists. This makes me wonder how it'll work in a win32 DOS-window... just playing tracks by Agent-X while I surf. Well, there's only one way to find out... download it.
From the docs on the page, it's for soundblaster only, but supports output to a .WAV file... for easy conversion to .mp3, perhaps?
Anyway, I'm a busy guy, so if you want to know how it sounds, take a spin over at Chaosite and grab the 94k (!!) file.

 | R80 version 0.30 released |
|
| |
Well, doing my quick check of a few sites before my morning coffee, and I just happen to notice that R80, one of the better emulators out there, has had a version increase. It's been whacked up to v0.30. I've got some other stuff to do right now (hell, i'm at work!), so to save time, here's a quick rip of the highlights of this upgrade:
- sound: Stereo (ABC, ACB and all other combinations)
- sound: Right volumes. Thanks to Sergey Vladimirovich Bulba for the table.
- sound: Updated GUI to allow configuration of new options.
- Added some options to debugger.
- debugger: Registers, flags and IM can be changed from debugger.
- bug: Fixed loading from ZIP & RAR with spaces in the path or filename.
- bug: Fixed scanning inside of RAR.
There's a heap of other changes too, so if you want the full details, check out the R80 page over at Chaosite.

Okay, I missed this one, I'll admit it. A few days ago Chaosite was updated with the CC999.999 and CC000 Invite results. You already know who won each compo (if not, just check below), but there's some more info over there with regards the voting for CC999.999.
Also, you can go download all of the CC000 invites. Gasman has a policy of only using .tap files on Demotopia (and rightly so). So the guys over at Chaosite have lovely TuRDOS versions for you to grab and play with if you have a Pentagon or whatever. They also have the entire CC999.999 collection available bundled up as several .RAR files.
You know the score. If you're serious about the scene, go grab the files. You can always watch them on an emulator (!!).

Partly after seeing the update of RealSpectrum yesterday, I've decided to alter the minimal emulator links section on the right. I'm turning it into Emu-Watchtm. Basically, I'm gonna try and keep the list of emulators up-to-date, along with their version. I'm currently scouting around for the latest versions of several, and once that's done, I'll add them all here, for a local download.
Of coz, if you can think of any extra features that'd be useful on this page, then mail me, and I'll see about putting them into action.

 | RealSpectrum goes beta |
|
| |
Well, we're really getting somewhere with this up-to-date page malarky. This news comes only a day after RealSpectrum, the emulator from demogroup Ramsoft, goes up a version.
This new release sees it move from pre-beta status to an official public-beta, at version 0.40.26. Updates include instant loading turbo-loaders (which'll help with all those alcatraz and speedlock games), various interface changes, and the obligatory bug-fixes.
If you've not yet seen RealSpectrum, go grab a copy now. It's worth the download (even if it is written for DOS <g>).

Got a mail from Arty earlier that the results for the CC000 Invitation Compo have been released. Here's a quick rundown of the results:
1 - MeLANGe / LFG/4D/Sage
2 - CCinvitation / Razzlers
3 - CCY2K / Eternity Industry
4 - Technogen / Brainwave
5 - Voodoo / Scene
6 - ARTe / Scene
More details are available over at Chaosite.
And if you're yearning to see what all the fuss is about, then pop over to Demotopia -- all the invites should be available for download pretty-damned sharpish.

 | More demos at Demotopia |
|
| |
What did I say? Eh? Typical. I'm uploading, and I see Gasman online, who tells me that he's added some more demos to Demotopia.
Of note are "Twin Worlds 2" by Exodus, and the Graphics and Music players for the Millenium party.
This brings the total on Demotopia to a staggering 1239. Sweet! I'm off to fill up my collection <g>

 | No news is... |
|
| |
Well, I was trudging around a couple of the better Speccy & Demoscene sites today, and there's not much in the way of news (heh, by the time i've uploaded this, there'll be news aplenty). So, I thought I'd have a quick play with the site design. Nothing major, just that now the page is optimised for an 800pixel width screen. I think it just looks less cramped.
The logo at the top-left is temporary... but it looks better than the ugly gap that was there after re-sizing.
You may wonder why only the width has changed, when so much else needs doing. Well, I like total control over my page, so like a fool I hand-code it in HTML. Of coz, this takes time, but the end result is (I hope) pleasing. Remember to send comments and links to me, and I'll make changes as-and-when.

3 - Anamnesis / Real Masters
As for the alternative and normal results, it's a variation in the way the votes were counted. The alternative results use averages of the voted positions, while normal results use straight totals. No, it makes sense, really it does <g>.

 | RealSpectrum pre-beta3 released |
|
| |
This is a new site, and I'm trying to catch up on any recent news. Which is my lame excuse for only just noticing the release of the latest pre-beta RealSpectrum emulator. Of all the emulators I've seen, this is the best so far. Even in it's early stages, it manages to get the video-sych pretty much perfect.
So go grab yourself a copy from the Ramsoft homepage. It'll be worth the download.

 | R80 0.23 released |
|
| |
During my occasional scan of Chaosite I noticed that a few days ago, there was a new version of the R80 emulator released. Seems to be mainly a bug-fix, but here's what's changed:
- New: Crap 320x200 50Hz video mode.
- Updated: Save menu now shows the files, so you can select a file instead of typing the name each time.
- Updated: Load data fileselector from debugger-memory now accepts all files, so a DAT extension is not required.
- Bug: Fixed save code when final address is #FFFF.
- Bug: Fixed fileselector crash when path of r80.ini is not valid.
- Bug: Fixed sound when set to none. It was crashing in games using beeper and while loading TZX.
- Bug: Fixed a bit TAP loader, which was not working well in some cases.
- Bug: Fixed automatic tape start. It was starting tape sometimes that should not.
So go get it now.

 | BOA reviewed |
|
| |
LaesQ just sent me a mail that BOA (Bunch Of Arse : the first demo by Raww Arse) has been reviewed. Anubis (of Speccy Boyz and ZeroTeam) has reviews of some of the best demos available on his site. If you're new to the demoscene, it's definately worth a check.
You can grab BOA from Demotopia, or over at Anubis' site.

 | Minor adjustments |
|
| |
I've made a couple minor adjustments to the layout of the page, and added an Icon thing to each headline. There's only one so far, and I'll make more as I need them. That's it.

 | Open for Business |

I've set up a news email address, so you can now send any news here. Demoscene news is preferred, but anything Spectrum/Sinclair-related will be considered.
You can also send web-page plugs to me, and i'll go about adding them to the links over on the right.

 | We're getting there |
|
| |
As you can hopefully see, the site is shaping up quite nicely. The Sections links don't lead anywhere yet, tho' all other links on the page should be working fine.
Of coz, I'm happy to take any input on-board, so please let me know of any problems with the site, whatever they may be.
If it looks bad in some obscure web-browser, i'll download a copy and try to fix it. If some error occurs, I'll try to fix it. Or if you just hate the design, I may even try to fix that ;]
And be sure to check out LaesQ's Raww Arse Archive, and Gasman's Demotopia... both top sites for Spectrum Demo Heaven.

 | icabod's arse |
|
| |
Well, I've finally got my arse into gear and done something with this damned web-page. As you can see, it's nothing special yet, but I thought I'd put up some kinda work, so that you can see I haven't been slacking as much as it seems <g>
There should be a whole load of updates in the next few weeks, including better layout, and some content. Hoorah!
Anyway, that's it for now. Time to upload.
