Bring Back Your Sinclair
Posted By: accus, Monday, March 29, 2004 - 03:21 PM
The high street magazine Retro Gamer is bi-monthly and probably will turn monthly, has alot of Spectrum content. The first issue has sold on eBay for inflated prices like 25 pounds Sterling. While RISC OS still has a high street magazine Qercus, even though there are few users left. This shows there is market for a Spectrum journal in colour, in newsagents. To make this happen please sign the petition, "The longest journey begins with a single step". The site does not always work, so try again later if the domain name does not resolve. I think this to stop their servers being overwhelmed.

it's an interesting idea, retro is certainly coming back into fashion, and the resurgence of retro 'zines (and retro sections in 'zines) is easily visible. my concern is that any effort to bring back YS would result in a below-par, low-quality parody of what was once a great magazine.
IMHO, the closest magazine to YS with regards the quality of humour and writing is PC Gamer -- and wait, didn't current editor Mark Donald used to write for YS? or am i imagining things. hmm. |

| I personally would love to see YS return - going into a newsagents and seeing a crisp new issue is something that I have, on several occasions, literally dreamed about. But at the same time, I feel resigned to accept that it's only a fanciful dream, like wanting Sir Clive to be prime minister or wanting to make passionate love to Natalie Portm...er, where was I? In the end, if anyone's going to make Your Sinclair's revival a reality, it's not going to be the writers whom we idolised in our youth but who have since moved on to bigger things... it's going to be us, the fans. And for that reason, I'd suggest that a much better way to advance the cause would be to support the existing fanzines - I've seen editors from English, German and Russian Speccy magazines all commenting on how hard it is to attract contributions, so that's the place to start. I'm sure the major publishers would be more likely to take notice of a genuine thriving community they can tap into, than a bunch of names vaguely expressing interest, no matter how many thousands of names there are. |

A High Street presence is certainly something to be fought for - but the RISCOS situation isn't parallel. Qercus gets its readership - that allows it into newsagents - because it isn't retro. There have been two new RISC OS machines released in the past year, not to mention hybrid emulators and other developments on the way.
I wouldn't have risked producing a magazine for BBC B users - though it might be fun to include a column within Qercus - and we succeed *because* we have people using RISC OS machines as up to date home & business computers. We produce Qercus on one! [StrongARM RiscPC if anyone's interested]. Of course if anyone has good ideas for strengthening the position of alternative OS magazines (ie non-Windows) in newsagents then we're listening - and willing to pass on any good strategies.
